We are assisting a family in rehoming their 3-year-old Great Dane, Pepper. This has been a very difficult and emotional decision for them, made out of love and concern for the safety and well-being of everyone in their home.

Why She Needs a New Home

Pepper is not comfortable around children and has shown reactive behaviors toward both kids and other animals in the household. With a new baby arriving soon, her family is no longer able to safely manage the environment she needs to feel secure.

Although Pepper gets along with the family’s other dog most of the time, she has initiated unprovoked attacks on him—most recently causing a bite wound. She has also shown persistent, provoking behavior toward the household cat. These incidents have increased in frequency and intensity over time, and the triggers are often unclear.

Personality & Behavior

  • Pepper is anxious and slow to warm up to new people. She has a small circle of adults she feels safe with, but is generally reactive toward guests and needs to be crated or boarded during visits.

  • She is leash-reactive, especially to other dogs and sometimes people.

  • Pepper is not good with children. She has growled and attempted to bite in past interactions with both young and older kids.

  • At doggy daycare, however, she consistently receives positive feedback and enjoys structured playtime with medium to large dogs.

  • She is not destructive, does well when left alone, and has no separation anxiety.

What Kind of Home Pepper Needs

Pepper needs a calm, experienced, adult-only home with no children or cats. She may do well with a confident, large-breed dog who can match her play style and energy—but careful introductions and ongoing supervision would be necessary.

Her ideal home would be with someone who has experience managing fear-based reactivity and is committed to continuing her training and structure. She is smart, loyal, and thrives when she feels safe.
